Are you in search of a natural and eco friendly laundry detergent? A better alternative to the liquid detergents, pods, or tablets that supermarkets offer? I have used the Ecozone soap nuts for over 8 months now and I felt it was time to share my thoughts on them. Read on for an Ecozone soap nuts review!
FINDING AN ALTERNATIVE
It’s about a year ago that I came across the concept of soap nuts. I was researching alternatives to the liquid detergents, pods, and tablets that supermarkets offer. And laundry eggs and soap nuts were the most attractive alternatives I discovered.
At the time, the idea of soap nuts made me a bit nervous. And I couldn’t help but wonder whether they were really that effective. Because if they were. Wouldn’t more people use soap nuts instead of the chemical alternatives?
I have sensitive skin and Nathan gets eczema. So we already paid some attention to the type of laundry detergent we used. We tried to avoid the heavily perfumed products so we’d been using Fairy Non Bio pods. But I wasn’t satisfied with them.
NATURAL IS BETTER
I preferred the idea of using natural laundry detergent to wash our clothes. Nathan would still regularly get eczema at that time and I would also get sore and itchy skin. Those issues probably weren’t just caused by the laundry detergent we used. I believe a combination of factors caused it. Such as: the type of shower gel, shampoo, deodorant, and moisturiser we used.
I am glad to say that my skin has improved after switching to natural alternatives. And Nathan rarely gets eczema after he joined me in a few of the switches! I mention my favourite natural shampoo and conditioner and body moisturiser in the following post: My Top 3 Non-Toxic Self Care Products of 2020. I also posted an extensive review of my favourite natural deodorant here.
FINDING A MORE ECO-FRIENDLY WAY
I also didn’t liked that the pods came in a plastic box. I couldn’t help but feel that the water-soluble polymer the pods are made of, would be harmful somewhere down the road. We are trying to switch to plastic free alternatives in our home. And the packaging of these pods just felt like a big NO-NO.
The polymer is said to be safe but when you do some research you’ll find out that it could cause cancer. And that it could be harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effects. When you search for the Fairy Non Bio pads on the Tesco website. It will indeed mention among the warnings that it could be harmful for aquatic life (find a little more on that here).

ECOZONE SOAP NUTS REVIEW
After a couple of months of pondering on it, we finally decided to take the plunge. We ordered the Ecozone soap nuts (in the 1 KG bag) on Amazon. We chose that brand since it had received good reviews and was reasonably priced.
When it arrived, I was a little bit disappointed. The package was neatly packed but somewhere along the road it must have gotten damp. Because the little pouches and the big storage bag were mouldy. Ecozone was great when I messaged them about it. Because not only did I get a quick response, they also refunded most of the money back. The soap nuts themselves weren’t damaged and the pouches still functioned as they should. So I was satisfied with just the refund.
When I opened the bag for the first time I was a bit taken aback by the smell of the soap nuts. I wouldn’t say that they smell bad but there is an interesting smell about them. I wondered whether our clothes would smell like that after washing them with the soap nuts. But they actually don’t! They smell very lovely and clean in a natural non-perfumed way. If you prefer your clothes to have a perfumed smell. You could always consider using dryer balls with a few drops of essential oils on them!
The Ecozone soap nuts bag arrived with two little pouches. It’s brilliant that there are two because I can imagine losing the other one at some point! I usually fill the pouch with 4 soap nuts and that pouch will then last me around 4 washing sessions.
We’ve used the 1 KG bag for 8 months and we still have over half of the bag left. For 7 of those 8 months we’ve been washing clothing for 4 people with it, so it has last us well! At this rate, we’ll be paying 13 pounds per 18 MONTHS to wash our clothes. Not bad!
I find that the soap nuts are effective with the following clothes: daily, sport, and muddy clothes. It only doesn’t seem to work as well when you get the more extreme stains caused by grease or tea for example. But those stains would need extra attention and cleaning products anyway. Even when using the mainstream supermarket laundry detergents.
CONCLUSION
The conclusion of this Ecozone soap nuts review is that I would highly recommend it. They are eco friendly, natural, work well, and you get great value for your money.
I am very curious… What do you use to wash your clothes? If you use chemical laundry detergents, would you consider using soap nuts?
Much love,
Jenna
Love the soap nuts, the bag lasted for over a year!!clothes clean and fresh!
A very honest review, thank you
I am so glad this review was helpful. I posted this review in March 2021 and I still use the soap nuts today! I only use a different type of detergent for our ‘poop’-y baby clothes to get the stains out.
Thanks for the review. I’ll try the soap nuts.
